What is a Driver Evaluation?

A Driver Evaluation with Adaptable Driving is performed by a skilled licensed Occupational or Physical Therapist from our team and includes 3 main steps.
Step 1

We perform a full and comprehensive evaluation of an individual including testing of physical abilities, sensation, movement, memory and driving readiness.

Step 2

Following the evaluation, a behind the wheel assessment may be completed in our specialized driving vehicle.

Step 3

Review and discussion of outcomes related to an individual’s fitness to drive including any next steps.

Evaluation Process

Step 1

Clinical Evaluation

The first step to any driving assessment is a clinical evaluation. We perform this in your home or community. We review your medical and driving history and proceed with a variety of tests to assess your function and determine if you are ready and able to be in the driver’s seat. Testing includes meeting state vision requirements, visual motor skills, visual tracking, physical movement and strength, memory, concentration, and problem solving. We also include driving knowledge tests to ensure understanding of road rules and signs.
Step 2

Behind the Wheel

Behind-the-Wheel: Our clinical testing helps guide our professionals on next steps. If you are able and ready to perform driving, we will perform a behind the wheel assessment. Using our company driving rehab car, you will drive both familiar and unfamiliar routes in your community so we can evaluate your driving abilities.
Step 3

Review and Planning

After the clinical and behind the wheel evaluation are complete, we will have a conversation with you and your care team or family. We will go over our recommendations and next steps.

Our recommendations center around fitness to drive and can include: ready to resume or continue driving, driver training required or driving retirement.

These steps may include:
