New Driver

New Driver Readiness Program

Learning to drive can take additional time, preparation, and support for some individuals. Our Driver Readiness Program is designed specifically for new drivers who benefit from a structured, clinically informed approach. We are a private practice Occupational Therapy program providing Comprehensive Medical Driving Evaluations and specialized on road training. We are NOT a driving school, and our instruction is tailored to the individual and medical needs.
Who this program is for:

Areas of Focus

Anxiety

Anxiety on the roadway can lead to poor focus and hesitation with decision making.

Visual Tracking and Processing

Scanning the environment for road hazards, pre-planning for turns, maintaining lanes and reacting to hazards.

Road Rules and Sign Understanding

Rehearsal and recognition of signs and how to react to the information

Social Skills

Reading the movement and body language of other cars on the roadway. Managing emotions in the environment.

Executive Functioning

Building strategic driving skills including navigation, route planning and dealing with challenges on the roadway.

Sensory Processing

Establishing an environment for safety and comfort addressing sensory needs of the individual in the vehicle.

Our comprehensive program is ideal for new drivers who may have medical considerations, are neurodivergent, have autism, anxiety with driving or simply benefit from a more individualized and structured approach to learning how to drive safely. We only work with clients who have an active Learners Permit or License.

Our Program Approach

We use a two-part evaluation process that blends clinical expertise with practical, behind-the-wheel assessment:

1. Clinical Driver Readiness Evaluation

The first step is a comprehensive clinical assessment completed by licensed Occupational Therapists with expertise in Autism, ADHD, Executive Function Challenges, and Mental Health Concerns from Across All Ages Therapy
This evaluation reviews medical history and functional skills that are important for driving, such as:
This step helps us understand how medical or developmental factors may impact driving and allows us to make thoughtful, individualized recommendations.

2. Behind-the-Wheel Driving Assessment

The second step is a behind-the-wheel evaluation conducted by our Occupational Therapy–trained Driving Specialists at Adaptable Driving. During this session, we assess:
Following this assessment, we develop a personalized plan that outlines next steps for driver training and skill development.
Based on the results, additional occupational therapy services or driving sessions may be recommended. These services are tailored to the individual’s specific goals and needs and are focused on increasing independence, confidence, and community mobility.
